Mixing of Nanocomposites

Posted in Lubricating at 12:59 am by Administrator

A few days ago, I shared the new application of three roll mills on fuel cells. Another new application is used in nanotech. A professor customer is mixing clays with epoxy to form nanocomposites. I was told the epoxy is diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A. Our three-roll mill was found to be an effective means of dispersion and exfoliation of the clay particles in the matrix. Compared to the conventional direct and solution mixing techniques, the compounding of clay/epoxy nanocomposites by a three-roll mill was found to be highly efficient in achieving higher levels of intercalation/exfoliation in a short period of time. I wish I understood what he was talking about.

Three Roll Mill for Fuel Cells

Posted in Lubricating at 6:59 pm by Administrator

Lately we are getting a lot of inquiries for our popular lab models. The application is fuel cells. Guess everyone is going green. Our lab models are being used by at least 10+ customers in making electrodes for Solid State Fuel Cells and more. Fascinating applications. Fuel cell is one of the solutions for our future energy needs.

I was fortunate to chair a technical conference about fuel cells. In this conference, I learned a lot of about fuel cells and co-edited the presentations into a book: Fuel Cell Electronics Packaging, published by Springer. Here is the link: http://www.springer.com/west/home/generic/search/results?SGWID=4-40109-22-173727516-0

Today’s commercial, medical and military electronics are becoming smaller and smaller. At the same time, these devices are packed with more functions and demand more power. This power requirement is currently met almost exclusively by battery power. A fuel cell is like a battery converting chemical energy directly to electricity. The convergence of fuel cell technology and microelectronics is enabling the new design and manufacturing of fuel cells.

Fuel Cell Electronics Packaging presents the latest developments in the technology convergence of microelectronics and fuel cells. Using the well established manufacturing methods used in microelectronics packaging, fuel cells can be further fabricated in smaller sizes with higher energy density, at a faster pace and lower cost. This book uniquely addresses this issue.  Fuel Cell Electronics Packaging serves as a practical reference guide for engineers, researchers, and manufacturers of microelectronic and fuel cell products who are interested in topics such as:

  • ceramic hybrid separators for micro fuel cells

  • miniature fuel cells built with LTCC technology

  • novel fuel cells fabricated using microelectronics technology

  • fuel cell thermal management

Written by a variety of professional and academic sources, Fuel Cell Electronics Packaging is a valuable resource for those interested in the latest advances in fuel cell technology. Written for:

Scientists, engineers, and researchers interested in the development of fuel cells and microelectronic products

Lubrication for 16X40 Three Roll Mill

Posted in Lubricating at 6:18 am by Administrator

Last week a US 16×40 three roll mill customer asked for detailed instruction for lubrication.

In our Owners’ manual, we wrote:

 machine lubrication and maintenance

The machine has sealing lubrication structure for the gears. It is required to add industry gear oil; the oil lever should reach half of the oil gauge. It can not add more than that to prevent the oil from spraying out. The bearing base has been added oil before shipping, it is unnecessary to put more oil in for the new machine first time operation. After running 120 hours, the oil can be injected by oil injection tool.

  1. The lubrication oil must be added into transmission axle through lubricating nipple.
  2. Lubrication oil should be added very often at those places, such as: every adjusting screw, high/low speed roller bearing base and base orbit, to prevent the gear teeth from choking.
  3. One major maintenance shall be carried out after six month continuous operation. Dismantle all those moving part and clean it. Apply new oil and inspect the oil cycling situation. Correct the problem if it is found.
  4. If the concave area in the middle part of roller is found, surface material exfoliating or distortion is found, please stop operation and repair it immediately.
  5. If the roller is repaired too many times and the roller diameter is more than 1.5mm smaller than nominal diameter, the gear transmission will conflict so that it will make the gap between rollers too big to grind the material well. The gear must be repaired under this condition to reduce its diameter, or the roller must be replaced.
  6. The collecting blade edge must be very sharp and smooth. Burr and split are seriously prohibited. When the blade is short, just loose the screw to move the blade out. If the blade is finished and you change a new blade, please choose the right hardness usually between 30HRC and 40 HRC.
  7. If the mill has not been operated for a long time, please apply anti corrosion grease on roller surface and other related place to avoid stain and pinhole. Thorough inspection shall be carried out before next operation.
  8. If the cooling water flows into the machine, it means that the cooling water flow is too strong. So the incoming water controlling valve should be closed a little bit, and meanwhile loose the water drainage screw, let the water inside gear box flow out and increase the size of water drainage hose.

End Plates

Posted in Lubricating at 10:47 pm by Administrator

Today our customer from Ace Polymers asked the following question:
The tip of end plates for the lab model was slightly bent during the shipping, will it scratch the rollers?
The rollers are made out of hardened steel (hardness HR 70). The end plates are made out of tempered brasss (hardness HR <10). The end plates will not scracth the rollers.
